Why were 20th Century shootings of U.S. political figures NEVER political? Always "lone nuts"?

JFK was shot because the mafia was upset with his brother Robert's tough stance against organized crime. they killed JFK to send a message to Robert that he wasn't invincible, and he found that out a few years later.
