once constantine commandeered christianity, it ceased to be a religious movement and became an instrument of imilation. constantine chose it because its doctrine is exclusive and he could use it to consolidate his empire. he added a couple of hundred years to the life of the western empire and created an institution that continued to oppress the population for over a thousand years.
